Klari/Claire leaves her grandparent?s home in revolution- torn Europe to rejoin her parents who emigrated to Canada when she was still a toddler. Other than a few letters and photographs, Klari/Claire has had no contact with her parents in all this time and is plagued with conflicting emotions at the upcoming reunion. Do they really want her? Will her parents like her? Will she like them? Who will read to her great-grandmother now that she has moved to Canada? To avoid disappointment, she vows not to let her parents know the real Klari/Claire. However, this pact with herself becomes a double burden when the strangeness of a new country, language, customs, and new school threaten to overwhelm her with loneliness. It is only through listening to the growing whisper of her conscience that she can take the step towards reconciliation with her parents and the discovery of true friendship.
